3 Message from the Managing Director For 45 years Alpha Laboratories has been providing quality supply and support to UK and international scientists for their diagnostic and laboratory product needs. The company remains today, as always, a family run business with the same vision and ethos. Alpha Laboratories is passionate about finding new ways to help science improve people’s lives by developing Diagnostic and Laboratory solutions. The business relies on strong working relationships with numerous suppliers some of whom have supplied the company for more than 30 years. Sustainability has been on our minds for some time with various initiatives but has really gained momentum in the last year as the Company’s strategic focus has been formalised with an internally developed Environment Social Governance (ESG) programme under the banner of People, Planet, Culture. People: we believe that change begins within and as an inclusive, ethical and diverse organisation our people are the most important part of our vision. We continually review our employee policies and benefits and have been improving them year on year. Employee satisfaction is regularly measured with our staff opinion surveys and we continue to invest in staff training and development. Equally, we take our responsibility to the local community seriously, whether that be by donating funds to local and national charities or awarding every staff member up to 3 days annually to volunteer in a charity or setting of their choosing. Alpha’s partnership with local schools and colleges has flourished with some 81 A-level students from Barton Peveril College taking part in onsite Science Aspire days facilitated by Company Staff. Similarly, our employees’ aspirations to reduce emissions has led to a number of initiatives and projects: working with RSPB volunteers to plant an Alpha garden and hedgerow; adding electric charge points, ‘Bike to Work’ schemes, a vegetable plot, E-Forest planting initiative, numerous new initiatives to adopt energy efficiencies, change in vehicle policy to purchase/ lease electrical cars only and a reduction in staff commutes by ~ 60% by adopting a hybrid working policy. Culture: in pursuit of innovation, value and performance we never compromise our ethics or caring responsibility to our employees, customers and suppliers. We have implemented a Supplier Code of Conduct, which is a requirement of our approved suppliers. We have built our reputation on high standards of customer service, integrity and trust. We have established an action plan which identifies projects aligned with the People, Planet, Culture pillars and our Sustainability Working Group meet regularly to ensure that we keep up momentum with activities and communication. Alpha values the external validation of our systems and hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 13485 certifications. We have measured our carbon footprint, which has been verified to ISO 14064-3. This is the first report we have produced based on sustainability standards and we welcome the chance to share this information with our customers and stakeholders.
